HIV + STI Testing
Knowing your HIV status is an important part of a healthy sex life. Testing is the only way to know your status for sure. Whatever the reason for testing – for most guys, it’s better to know their status. In Vancouver, 1 in 5 gay men have HIV. Of those guys with HIV, about 14% are unaware of their positive status.
Where Do I Get Tested?
For men who have family doctors, this may be one way of getting tested for HIV. For guys without doctors, or those who do not feel comfortable speaking with their doctor about their sexual choices, a walk-in or STI clinic may be a better option. The HIM Health Centres (on Davie, on the Drive, in New West, and in Surrey) both specialize in HIV and STI testing for gay guys and other men who have sex with men.
Not all tests are available at all doctor’s offices and clinics. It’s best to inquire in advance. You can find a list of testing locations, and the types of tests they offer at:
HIM has developed an online HIV testing resource that provides tools for risk assessment, SMS and email testing reminders, notifying partners of an HIV or STI infection, and a clinic locator.
